About

Mel was born into the (in)famous Medarda family, a long line of warriors and great prestige. Unlike her mother, Ambessa, Mel did not revel in bloodshed and violence and preferred to be like her older brother, Kino, who prided himself in diplomacy. But Ambessa wanted Mel to be the fox and the wolf, able to make it in the harsh world by being both skilled in words and a fighter at heart. Unable to live up to her mother's expectations, Mel was exiled from her home in Noxus and sent to Piltover some 10+ years ago.

Mel is a skilled politician now, far removed from Noxus, able to read people and the room at large. While polite and even warm, any kind of acquaintanceship is held at arms-length, especially in her ambition to bring greatness to Piltover, which will in turn elevate her own status (hopefully) in her mother's eyes. It's not that she doesn't care and more that she doesn't allow her walls to come down, and she is slow to warm up to people outside of that surface-level warmth. She is cautious, often assessing first and making decisions later, and guarded with her emotions - until her mother is involved. Mel still has no love for violence or war, and her life outside of Noxus has altered her worldview, both in seeing people as opportunities and in believing that violence is a last resort in the pursuit of peace. Slowly, she is trying to believe that compassion is a better option than her mother's belief of sacrifice.

first impressions Mel carries herself with her head held high, tall and straight-backed. Once often in dresses, now she favors clothes she can move more freely in. She is always impeccably dressed, sporting blacks, whites, and golds, gives the impression she is put together and careful about how she appears to others. Warm and polite, she shows herself as curious and engaging with people around her but always at a kind of arms-length in terms of care and concern. She frequently gives off the air of conscious competence in what she does, regardless of whether she's as capable as she appears to be. More observant people catching her at a vulnerable moment may see her fussing with her fingers when she is nervous.

features She sports darker makeup juxtaposed by gold: gold lines on her eyes, golden freckles, golden tattoos on her shoulders and throat. Now those golden tattoos are more prominent on her face, and will glow at times when responding to magic - or when responding to Mel's emotions.

Powers

shields/energy

Mel can conjure up shields made out of light, and these shields can be used either on herself or around others. She was able to fend off all damage from a giant rocket landing in the middle of the room from behind her (but only for herself and for those in a small radius around her). She is able to use these shields as ricochet to smaller materials (like bullets), and she uses this to effectively kill someone by ricocheting a bullet from one location to another shield, to another, and then through the person's head. This looks to be similar to channeling energy into something - like a shield, for instance. She is also able to fling energy up and into people and push it down into the ground to cause a burst.

sight/empath

Mel is able to see/sense magic in the ruins she is being held in, and is able to solve the puzzle inside. She is also able to 'see' the face of LeBlanc eventually towards the end of canon when she effectively goes inside LeBlanc's..."dimension"? It's kind of unclear. But it looks like she is able to infiltrate LeBlanc's magic and see her for who she really is - at least by face, though it's unclear if Mel can see LeBlanc's true potential. I think it's logical to say she can 'see' that someone is powerful magically but not to the full extent, so if they are hiding powers or are waaay too powerful, I think there's a limit on what she can perceive. Especially now, with her being very new to magic.

mirror/conduit

Not sure how else to call this. But when Mel is captured by the Black Rose and bound up - and when the Black Rose attacks her later with the same method - both times she is able to channel her magic into those thorns that hold her and shoot her magic back towards them. I think this is the "conduit and mirror" that is spoken of before, that she can take someone's magic and push it right back to them on her own terms. This is also shown in a recent trailer for Noxus called "Bite Marks" where she pushes her magic back into the bindings that hold her and strike her opponents that way. So this is a kind of... Mel can mirror magic back to people when they attack her with their own. It goes well with the 'shield' part of her power.

bend magic

Again, not sure what to call this, but just mentioning that she is able to 'break into' LeBlanc's dimension of magic (or whatever it's supposed to be called, it's not clear at all in Arcane what it is). Mel has a different appearance here, all white and gold, and I think this is both Sight (being able to see LeBlanc and her dimension) and also the power to bend that magic to break into it. I want to note that being able to step into this place alone is not enough to disrupt the magic; she has to purposefully be the conduit and lash back out with her own magic before she's able to actually disrupt and bend the illusion.
